Meural Alternatives

The Meural Canvas II is out of stock on Netgear’s own store, so here are five displays to consider instead, from a $149 photo frame to a $6,999 square that renders generative art live.

Prices and features last verified October 22, 2026

The closest Meural alternative is Canvia, a 1920 x 1080 art frame with a 10,000+ piece catalog, listed at $499 to $527. For family photos with no subscription, Aura frames start at $149. For a TV that shows art, Samsung’s The Frame starts at $599.99. For moving art on a bigger screen, Blackdove’s canvases run $1,999 to $8,500. For generative art rendered live, the Layer Canvas is a 43.3-inch square at $6,999 plus tax, shipping mid-2027. Netgear said in November 2025 that Meural had not been discontinued, but its store now lists the Canvas II as out of stock.

Key takeaways

  • Netgear’s community moderator wrote on November 24, 2025 that the Meural Canvas had not been discontinued. On October 22, 2026, Netgear’s store marked both Canvas II sizes out of stock, with no price or buy button shown.
  • The Meural membership is still for sale from Netgear at $69.95 a year or $8.95 a month, for a library of 30,000+ works.
  • Canvia is the closest like-for-like replacement: its spec sheet lists the same 1.8 GHz quad-core ARM processor, 2 GB of DDR3 RAM and 1920 x 1080 resolution as the Meural Canvas II.
  • Aura frames ($149 to $499) carry no subscription fees and are built for personal photos. Samsung’s The Frame ($599.99 and up) is a TV with an Art Mode.
  • Blackdove and Layer are for moving and generative art: Blackdove streams to 4K canvases from $1,999, and the Layer Canvas renders generative art live on a 43.3-inch square for $6,999 plus tax.

Which Meural alternative should you choose?

  • Meural may suit you better if you already own one. Netgear still sells the membership at $69.95 a year and said in November 2025 it had no plans to remove the app, so a working Canvas II keeps a 30,000-work library on your wall for $69.95 a year.
  • Choose Canvia if you want the closest replacement: a similar 1080p frame, similar hardware, a 10,000+ piece catalog and a first year included, for about $500.
  • Choose Aura if your Meural mostly showed family photos. It costs $149 to $499 with no subscription fees.
  • Choose Samsung’s The Frame if you want one screen to be both your TV and your art, and you are happy with a 16:9 picture.
  • Choose Blackdove if you want moving video art on a large screen now, and you are comfortable with $1,188 a year for Patron after the first year.
  • Choose the Layer Canvas if you want generative art rendered live on a 43.3-inch square and can wait until mid-2027. It costs more than every other option here, and pre-orders are US only. Reserve one with a $99 refundable deposit, or see the best art TV alternatives for the wider field.

Is Meural discontinued?

Netgear says no. On November 24, 2025, a NETGEAR moderator on Netgear’s community forum wrote that “The Meural Canvas has not been discontinued, and there are no plans to date to remove the Meural app” (Netgear Community).

What a shopper sees is different. On October 22, 2026, Netgear’s product pages for the 27-inch and 21.5-inch Canvas II showed no price and no add-to-cart button, and the pages’ own product data marked every listed model out of stock and not orderable (Netgear MC327LW, Netgear MC321BL). The membership, by contrast, is still on sale. So the accurate answer is that the service is running and Netgear has not announced an end, but you cannot buy a new Canvas II from Netgear today.

What did the Meural Canvas II offer?

The Meural Canvas II is a wall-hung LCD frame in two sizes: 21.5 inches and 27 inches, both at 1920 x 1080. It runs on a 1.8 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A17 with 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage, detects whether it hangs horizontally or vertically, and responds to hand gestures as well as the Meural app for iOS and Android.

Netgear pitches it as a canvas for art and photography. Each unit ships with 42 preloaded images and access to 100 sampler images, and the Meural membership opens a library of 30,000+ works, some original to the platform. The product data on Netgear’s pages lists the 21.5-inch model at $599.99 and the 27-inch at $699.99, though neither could be ordered on October 22, 2026.

How much is a Meural membership, and is it still sold?

Yes, Netgear still sells it: $69.95 for a year or $8.95 a month, with an add-to-cart button live on its store on October 22, 2026 (Netgear Meural Membership). Without it, Netgear’s support page says owners keep the Sampler of over 100 works and can upload as many of their own images as they like (Netgear Support).

If you already own a Meural, that is the most useful fact on this page. A working Canvas II with a $69.95 membership costs less per year than Blackdove’s Collector plan at $228 or Layer Curation at $1,188.

What should you look for in a Meural alternative?

Start with what you used Meural for. If it was mostly family photos, a photo frame with free cloud uploads covers it. If it was the art library, look at catalog size and annual cost. If you wanted something that moves, you need a display built for video or for code.

Then check shape and size. Meural hangs in portrait or landscape at up to 27 inches. Of the options on this page, Aura’s frames are smaller, Canvia is close in size, Samsung’s The Frame and Blackdove’s rectangles are larger 16:9 screens, and only Blackdove and Layer sell a square.

Is Canvia the closest Meural alternative?

On hardware, yes. Canvia’s spec sheet lists a 1.8 GHz quad-core ARM processor, 2 GB of DDR3 RAM and 1920 x 1080 resolution, the same figures Netgear lists for the Canvas II, in a frame that measures 27 x 18 x 1.6 inches (Canvia). It hangs vertically or horizontally and uses what Canvia calls ArtSense, sensors that adjust each image to the room’s ambient light.

Canvia lists the canvas at $499 to $527 depending on frame color, with a year of its Premium library of contemporary art included. Its full catalog runs to 10,000+ pieces, with paintings from the Met, the Louvre, the Rijksmuseum and the National Gallery, and you can upload your own photos or link a crypto wallet to show NFT images and videos. The product page does not state what Premium costs after the first year.

Is Samsung’s The Frame a good Meural alternative?

It is if you also want a television. The Frame is a 4K TV in most sizes (the 32-inch is Full HD), sold from 32 to 98 inches, starting at $599.99 for the 32-inch, with customizable bezels sold separately (Samsung). When it is off, Art Mode shows artwork or your own photos.

Samsung’s Art Store holds over 4,000 artworks, per the FAQ on its US Frame page. Without paying, you get 30 refreshed works a month through Art Store Streams, which Samsung counts as 360+ different pieces a year; the full Art Store is $4.99 a month (Samsung Art Mode). The trade-off is shape: The Frame is 16:9, sized for film and TV. We compare it in detail in Layer vs Samsung Frame.

Is Blackdove a Meural alternative for moving art?

Yes. Of the options here, it is the one built for moving video art on a large screen today. Blackdove’s Digital Canvas is a 4K display manufactured by Samsung that boots straight into Blackdove’s curated stream of moving works (Blackdove). Rectangular models cost $1,999 at 32 inches, $2,999 at 50, $4,999 at 65 and $6,300 at 85; square models cost $1,999 at 33 inches and $8,500 at 60.

Every canvas includes a year of the Patron subscription, which costs $1,188 for 12 months after that, and Blackdove also sells a Collector plan at $228 a year. Blackdove adds new pieces weekly and says you license works for display through the subscription, with some available as NFTs or permanent licenses. Blackdove also sells a separate $12,300 Generative Media Player for works that run as code. See Layer Canvas vs Blackdove for the full comparison.

Is an Aura frame better for family photos?

For photos, Aura is the cheaper and simpler choice. Its frames run from the 10-inch Carver at $149 to the 13-inch Aura Ink e-paper frame at $499, with the 15-inch Walden, its largest HD frame, at $299 (Aura). Aura advertises no subscription fees and unlimited photo and video uploads, stored on its cloud.

Aura’s homepage pitches its frames for your own photos and videos and lists no art catalog. If you bought a Meural for the 30,000-work membership, Aura replaces the photo half of it. Its largest HD frame is 15 inches, against 27 inches for the larger Canvas II.

How is the Layer Canvas different from Meural?

The Layer Canvas renders generative art live, where Meural shows images. A generative work is code, and the Canvas runs that code as you watch. Our guide to generative art explains the medium.

It is also a different scale and price. The Canvas is a 43.3-inch square, on pre-order at $6,999 plus tax with a $99 deposit that is refundable, expected to ship mid-2027 to US addresses only (Layer). The art comes from Layer Curation, $99 a month for 250+ works with more added every month, by artists including Casey Reas, Zach Lieberman, Leander Herzog and JERES.

What does each art subscription cost per year?

Annual cost runs from nothing to about $1,200. Aura has no subscription. Samsung gives 30 free works a month and charges $4.99 a month for the full Art Store. Canvia includes its first Premium year. Meural costs $69.95 a year. Blackdove’s Collector plan is $228 a year and its Patron plan $1,188. Layer Curation is $99 a month, which is $1,188 a year.

The price gap tracks what you get. At the low end you pay for reproductions of paintings and photographs, or for a home for your own pictures. At the high end you pay for moving or generative work made for a screen, which is what Blackdove and Layer sell.
